Pontilles Sauvignon Blanc 2004 - £5.99Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.The writer, broadcaster and Master of Wine Jancis Robinson (among many others) reckons parts of France's sunny south are now producing some of the most interesting, best value and hand crafted wines to be found in the country. And certainly this richly concentrated Sauvignon twitched judges noses and tantalised their well-worn tastebuds at London's International Wine Challenge. Its 100% pure Sauvignon grapes - grown on higher and therefore slightly cooler slopes - has delivered a rich wine with gooseberry aromas and a nicely rounded ripe melon flavour. For those of you who like their whites a littles less tangy and grassy than Loire or Kiwi Sauvignons.

Mitchells Pass is high in the mountains above the Breede River valley and the vineyards where this mouthwatering white originated! Local winemaker Lelanie Germshuy has created a name for himself for wines of finesse, complexity and a taste of terroir ... as fans of his Sauvignon well know. Now he has done the same with crisp, clean Chenin - South Africa's speciality grape. Chenin is a grape that deserves wider recognition. It's capable of making wonderfully dry, refreshing whites ... and as Tim Atkin MW says ''Cape Chenin can be wonderful'', with more punch than their Loire counterparts.

Pech de Calade Roussanne 2005 - £5.99Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.Though much used to add spice and vibrancy to white Chateauneuf, the Roussanne grape seldom has the chance to shine on its own. Now those in the know are discovering just how good it can be! Pech (meaning little hill) de Calade is made from various domaines near Beziers in France's Midi by Australian supremo Richard Osborne. Selecting only the best parcels when they have reached optimum ripeness, he has created a well-balanced, complex style of wine. A wonderfully rounded mouthful of intense mineral and citrus, this is a weighty, lush style that provides a satisfying glass on its own yet has tons of character to partner food. Chill gently and crack open the bottle with sauced white meats, salmon with a lemon sauce, fish pie or a simple risotto. The cellar recommends Cantal cheese and quiche too!
Casa del Rio Verde Sauvignon Blanc 2006 - £5.99Price on 16-Jun-08 from Laithwaites.Zesty, refreshing Chilean Sauvignon - an exclusive find for usa made by supertalented winemaker Adolfo Hurtado at the award-winning Cono Sur winery, known for pushing the boundaries of Chilean winemaking with special projects like this. Young Adolfo has astounded the international wine circuit by scooping more awards than any other winemaker in Chile's history. He identified some special parcels of vineyard in the warm, lush Colchagua valley next to a river called the Rio Verde. The fruit here ripens easily but retains its elegance and balance thanks to the cooling breezes brought by the river. Bright, pale lemon colour. Vibrant aromas of ripe pear and citrus ... following through on the palate with refreshing grapefruit and a delicious crispness. And 2006 is proving a terrific year for aromatic whites of this quality.

And the Arriero winery has invested heavily to produce good value, high quality examples - like this crisply refreshing Chenin Blanc. The vineyards are about 60km north of Mendoza, the country's premium wine growing area. Here cold winters and hot summers allow Chenin to ripen properly. Rainfall is low but there is abundant snowmelt from the mountains. Excellent intensity, with fruity lemon and grapefruit aromas. Crisp and delicate, with a fresh, zippy finish. A wonderful aperitif.
