Game Overview
So, here we are again. The new Turok. A game that was a massive hit on the N64 back in 1997 and since then has seen a few other titles added to the series. For those of you who don't know, Turok is all about killing, whether it be with a gun or with your trusty knife, it has and probably always will be your run of the mill FPS game but instead of constantly taking out humans or monsters there is a nice blend between both although the monsters are actually dinosaurs.
You play the part of Joseph Turok who is a member of Whiskey Company, a very advanced and brutal team of killers basically (in a good way) that are out together to take out a guy called Kane and get him back to Earth. The ship that carries Whiskey Company is shot down and crash lands on a planet that looks like a scene out of Jurassic Park with Dinosaurs roaming freely and occasionally turning on each other but most of the time deciding they would like a piece of, yep, you guessed it, Joseph Turok!
The gameplay is very cinematic and incredibly cheesy in places opting for a dramatic shock value in places. For example, one of Whiskey Team, Slade, has a huge grudge against Turok because his brother dies in the same battle that Turok fled from, so the story writers make a scene out of these two characters talking and give it the Hollywood treatment, face to face, anger, emotion, etc. It's a good attempt at giving the game some early tension as it gives you an idea of what you are up against as you try to show the rest of Whiskey Company that you are a good soldier and that they can trust you.
Gameplay is a little slow to get going but the on screen visuals make up for that as you run through the exploding spaceship and then long grass outside. The dinosaurs you come up against can look a little bit wimpy at times and that statement is backed up when all it requires is a quick tap of RT and Turok jabs a knife into the dinosaur’s cranium, would he really be able to get that close? Who cares! It's a game!
The guns feel a little bit generic and boring and don't really have a great deal of character to each weapon. You can dual weald most of them which is always good fun and you'll rarely run out of ammo as there is a good supply throughout the levels be it from a fallen soldier, dead bad guy or a storage point.
Voice acting is good throughout the game and does help in roping you in to the storyline but the background music is fairly inconspicuous and you'll hardly notice it. That being said, in the heat of battle the gunfire will drown out most things!
Turok is relentless with enemies at certain points and will keep them flooding toward you to give it somewhat of a Rambo feel. The problem is, it's boring. Shoot 5 or 6 guys, shoot another 5 or 6, then another 5 or 6 and before you know it you have messed about in one section for 5-10 minutes and because all the enemies look the same, killed one, killed them all. The AI is fairly good so it does keep it challenging at times, and they will try to flank you but it's not really enough and due to this fact it can make the game quite tedious and very easy to remove from the disk tray.

Our Conclusions
There isn't a lot to complain about with the look and sound of Turok, it's fair to say that it does the basics right, but for us Turok is just another shooter, nothing ground breaking, nothing really different. Killing Dinosaurs with a knife is good fun but it's broken up with boring sessions of killing generic looking henchman, wave after wave of them. If you are a fan of Far Cry then you'll love Turok as it has a very similar feeling to it, add Jurassic Park to the equation and you get the idea.
Overall Score: 7/10
